me clowning during soundcheck...

normally soundcheck isn't that much fun of a task. i'm not really that fond of playing the "hurry up and wait" game with sound crews that don't have their shit together. DJ's who tour regularly know what i speak of: when "they" (sound crews) demand that you be at the venue at a very specific time and then once you get there, the equipment isn't even set up, forcing you to wait around and twiddle your fucking thumbs because of their incompetence, cutting into your personal time that you could be out copping some ill sneaks or records, or doing uh, yaddadamean???

but every now and then you run into a crew that is so on point (the Dub Car Show 2008 peeps) that soundcheck is fun. like today for instance in Chicago. today was one of those days where i had to break out the turntable cam.

peep me "needle dropping" and cutting up breaks, clearly having a good time. and that my friends, is part of what touring life is all about...

my theme music...

i was watching "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" this morning, and a line at the end of the movie gave me some quick, humorous inspiration.

Jack Spade said that "every hero needs his own theme music", and it was dope how KRS-One and D-Nice came in with the ill Dapper Dan leathers and performed "Jack Of Spades" while following him around. classic moment right?

well, without anyone following me around this is my theme music, haha...

it's only right that a DJ like myself came up with my own interpretation of "A Milli" since we've all heard the various MC's and rappers alike have their way with it, so i HAD to do it. i added scratches and ey'thing too but i had to hurry up and catch a flight so just wait til' i mix and master it once i get back home, wow...

to all my folks in Phoenix, when u hear me blast off with it at PHX on Friday night, know that it's going to be a muthafuckin' PROBLEM!!!

i'm a part of comedy history...

on this day of taping a performance of "Stand Up" in a rundown NYC car repair shop in late September or October '03, i don't think that any of us present knew that we were about to become a part of comedy history. yeah we knew Chapelle's Show was funny as hell but it seemed like it was only "us" (black people) that really "got it". yea, white people knew about it but they hadn't quite latched on to Dave yet. that all changed after THIS episode...

at the time of taping, we didn't know what sketches were gonna be on this particular episode whenever it aired. we just knew that we couldn't wait for it to air, lol...

the show producers were like "you don't have to really scratch if you don't want to because we only have 1 turntable, but we can give you a mic in order for you to be one of the additional hypemen."

i ain't no muhfuckin' rapper slash hypeman and Luda already had 3 muhfuckas doing adlibs that day (Fate, 20, and Tity Boi) so i basically said "hook that turntable up shawty and let's get it poppin".

can u say "good choice?"

not only did i get a lotta "face time", but the scratches i laid down during the performance were some of the best that i'd ever done in that type of setting (at that point in my career, lol). basically, upon deciding to scratch the classic Public Enemy #1 soundbite "1, 1, 1, hoo-hah", i knew that i had to do proper justice to it (just like a couple of my DJ heroes Jazzy Jeff and DJ Scratch did before me on classic records) and boy did i ever....

so much so that when the show finally aired a couple weeks later i got soooooooooooo many hits from DJ's around the country like "yo nigga you were killing that shit on Chappelle last night!!" as a DJ, that qualifies as one of those moments that you live for because you know that your peers are gonna be watching intently and paying attention to EVERY little thing you do or don't do so you gotta represent....

why this performance never made it to the DVD's of Chappelle's Show is beyond me, that's a question you gotta ask Chaka Zulu or Kevin Liles cause i heard that there was some type of clearance issue (????) but i wasn't privy to the exact details. all i know is that whenever i see this episode being rerun i get HYPED cause i know i held it down for all the REAL DJ's in the world.

thank you Marisa for unearthing this gem for me...

y'all holla back now ya hear???

fun on the tables...

the first clip is from Ludacris' performance at the Greek Theater last week for the Battleground Earth tv show that airs August 3rd. i felt like having a rock star moment since Tommy Lee was onstage drumming during the performance so i had to incorporate the "turntable cam". the audio is kinda fuzzy but u get the idea...

the second clip is me waking up in the morning and heading straight to the tables for a quick beat juggling session with "Super Brooklyn" by the Cocoa Brovaz aka Smif N Wessun. it was fun because i hadn't seen that record in about 5 or 6 years until i came across it while doing some cleaning the other day and i wanted to see if i could still "go in" on it like i used to when i first bought it back in late '99 from Fat Beats Atlanta. i think i did a pretty good job of fucking with it, i may even start including this during my DJ set in Luda's show cause it's about that time to retire the Justin Timberlake routine, lol...

enjoy...

me being crazy...

i like to have fun when i travel. so much so, that sometimes i find myself doing some downright niggerish shit ey' now and then.

case in point, my flight home to Atlanta after 4 days in Phoenix, Arizona.

when sitting in first class for trips longer than 3 hours you get fed, and i must say that depending on the airline, the food is pretty decent. but on this day in particular i wanted some soul food and we all know Delta ain't servin' no crispy fried chicken, red beans, collard greens and Jiffy cornbread on the plane. so on the way to the airport i make a stop at Mrs. White's Golden Rule for some of that soul...

and i took it on the plane with me. yea, i could've eaten it before boarding but what fun would that have been?

note that i didn't say one word in the clip. my face tells the whole story...

and then i washed it all down with a tasty beverage, lol...

fun times i tell ya...
