what a week this should be...

just got out of the brainasium, had a pretty cool session today. i laid down another Eargasms joint (which will be number 6) and lemme tell ya...

in addition to some timeless hiphop classics, i got really creative with the blending on this joint. records that i've always wanted to hear in a different context got my "blender" treatment and they came out of it just fine. for the most part, i kept it recognizable since i know that my 90's joint that i did a couple weeks back might've gone over a few heads. understand though, that wasn't intended to be a "best of" type of mix. just some of my personal faves that i always rocked with and i figured if Just Blaze could do one, why can't i?

anyway, so yeah i have two more joints dropping this week. Eargasms 6 and a collaboration mixtape with my favorite blog site (TSS is MAJOR!!!) based on the music and influence of one of hiphop's all-time greatest groups. the mix was done damn near a month ago but i've been sworn to maintain an air of mystery around it until it drops this week (FINALLY, lol). if you need some type of hint, the group has been in the game for 20 years, and it was a task trying to put all of their classics and dope ass album cuts & select soundtrack singles into 79 minutes and 30 seconds. i was up to the challenge though, and i believe that this mix can create new fans of the group, as well as make longtime fans be like "dayummmmmm!!"

that is all for now, gotta head to Cali this week for some equipment maintenance and shows later this week. maybe i'll finally get some Madden time in...

i found the intro to this joint a few weeks back while doin' a little diggin and the shit was so hilarious to me that i just had to use it for something. so last Friday night, Apple Jac and I were having a impromptu turntable session and i started cutting the "adjust them beams" phrase and we just kept crackin the fuck up. next thing you know, the MPC was turned on and the result of that is what you now hear.

one thing that i will give my father the utmost credit for is very good musical sensibility. in addition to the regular rock & soul most kids gravitate towards, he exposed my young impressionable ears to the sounds of artists like Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Hubert Laws, Hugh Masekela, Yusef Lateef, Fela Kuti, and Sadao Watanabe among many others. there was a lotta vinyl around the crib at all times and i used to sit for hours in my room intently reading liner notes, inquisitive about who played what instrument and who produced what. which leads me to mention the 2 guys in the above pic.

The Mizell Brothers were a highly influential production team in the 1970s, consisting of Larry and Alphonzo Mizell.[1]
In the early seventies Larry and Fonce Mizell moved to California to start their own company Sky High Productions. They went on to produce albums for Blue Note with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny "Hammond" Smith that set the tone for fusion and the era.

the reason for this post is because after all these years of digging pretty much everything these 2 guys have ever laid down in the studio, i finally decided to make a mix of my favorites. Apple Jac had been getting on me for years to do an all Donald Byrd joint, but the Mizell production touch wasn't exclusive to just him so i included other artists as well.

the mix is basically 70's funk/fusion/Sample Clearance/Jaycee, that's the best way i can explain it and i hope you enjoy. a lotta this stuff should be very recognizable, and if not the music is so good you'll just rock with it anyway.

there are a couple glitches in the matrix, but that kinda adds to the appeal i think. normally i'd scrap it and start from scratch but fuck it, lol...

one more thing: no "Ultimate Breaks & Beats" were used or harmed in the making of this mix...

before "Babies Making Babies", there was "Kissin' In The Crates", a 4 volume set of soulful gems compiled by my homeskillet Apple Jac. these compilations were recorded between 2001 & 2002 and for those of you who may be like "where have i heard the name Apple Jac before?", i posted a dope mix of his entitled "Obscurely Familiar" around these parts earlier this year.

some of these joints may be familiar to us because they've been sampled by some of our faves recently, and some haven't but all and all, this is good quality music that we can all get down with point blank period.

2 new mixtapes coming by week's end...

1. untitled as of yet and with about 12 minutes to complete on it, this is basically a foray into some of my favorite 90's hiphop joints. it isn't the "definitive BEST of the 90's" type of mix, but if you're a hiphop head as i am, you'll definitely be familiar with the joints i'm using. the intro may throw you for a loop for a sec because i'm using "Public Service Announcement" in the intro, but as it progresses it makes total sense. you'll see what i mean as you listen. if you don't hear one of YOUR faves on the first installment, don't fret. there will definitely be more volumes to come...

first off, Term's verses are pretty cool but GODDAMMIT Bun B WENT IN!!! he sounds like he's been working with Primo for years but this is the first time the Texas natives have ever worked together. here's hoping that they do more shit in the future.

see how good he sounds over production that he isn't normally accustomed to??? it's because he's willing to try something different and challenge himself as an MC, something that i've been trying (ahem...ahem) to tell someone that i work with for the past few years with no luck. not about to try and beat niggaz in the head with shit they should already know...

and last but certainly not least, you gotta give super props to the man on the MPC cause this beat is HARD AS FUCK!!! to quote myself from an interview i did earlier this year "how do Jay and Nas shit on Premier beats and then turn around and accept Swizz Beats?" like i understand the need to have a variety of tracks on an album but there should be a LAW stating that any rapper with any type of worthwhile lyrical dexterity should have a Premier track on their album.

Ludacris & Dj Drama appeared on MTV recently to talk about Luda's new mixtape that's about to drop called "The Prequel" as a part of DJ Drama's "Gangsta Grillz" series. They both comment in the video as to why it took them so long to get together in collaborating on a mixtape. Well let's see.....maybe it's because T.I. & Ludacris had beef at one point? (Maybe they still do, but T.I.'s got bigger issues to worry about these days)

It's not a secret that DJ Drama is T.I.'s deejay & they've made big moves together throughout their careers thus far. Sooooooooo...you don't want to appear to be biting the hand that's feeding you so maybe that's one of the reasons why it took them so long to get together. Then again maybe it's because the dollars or business outside of the creative part may have been an obstacle. Anyway who knows & who cares as long as Luda keeps flexing those lyrical talents. Over here we don't care about the business because we are consumers of good music & solely focus on the music. Which is why we all noticed something very interesting in our discussions about Ludacris with his very successful career thus far.

Although Ludacris is a very talented lyricist outshining many other rappers on the same song & has plenty of solo hit singles, it feels like he's never put out an album that you could listen to all the way through. He has yet to make THE classic album like an Illmatic, Ready To Die, Reasonable Doubt, Atliens, The Chronic, KING, Low End Theory, All Eyez On Me, & Only Built For Cuban Linx, among others. Quite simply Ludacris is "Paid In Full", but he's yet to make everyone in the game "Follow The Leader". It's not that he's not talented enough, but maybe he could take the advice of a group of people including one that's already close to him. His deejay...DJ Jaycee. DJ Jaycee is one of the most talented deejays in Atlanta & is very knowledge about hip hop music. Why hasn't Ludacris done a high powered mixtape with the direction & ideas of his own deejay? Jaycee is definitely not a "internet" deejay because the kid has skills & can battle the best of them. We're postive the mixtape would be interesting with the choice of tracks used & the deejaying talents being exploited.

If Ludacris's new album "Theatre of The Mind" is already completed, then it's understandable that some of these ideas couldn't come into play immediately. But for an artist like Ludacris, why not employ a team of a few deejays he respects to A&R or provide a musical & creative direction for the next musical project? Many deejays put out creative mixtapes so for Ludacris's elusive "Classic" album he should have a good A&R team of deejays to sit in the studio & provide ideas. Most artists should employ a team of deejays to maybe go in the studio with the artist & work. It's just a suggestion. Also it would be a wise idea to start at home & to drop a mixtape with one of the few people who probably knows Ludacris best at this point. His name is DJ Jaycee & he's already Ludacris's deejay.

just for the simple reason that this was used AT ALL in the making of an album that was so monumental in hiphop, is reason enough for Prince Paul to be considered as one of the all time greats. next time u listen to that album, refer back to this piece. i guarantee you'll appreciate it even more than you already did...
