i'm a part of comedy history...

on this day of taping a performance of "Stand Up" in a rundown NYC car repair shop in late September or October '03, i don't think that any of us present knew that we were about to become a part of comedy history. yeah we knew Chapelle's Show was funny as hell but it seemed like it was only "us" (black people) that really "got it". yea, white people knew about it but they hadn't quite latched on to Dave yet. that all changed after THIS episode...

at the time of taping, we didn't know what sketches were gonna be on this particular episode whenever it aired. we just knew that we couldn't wait for it to air, lol...

the show producers were like "you don't have to really scratch if you don't want to because we only have 1 turntable, but we can give you a mic in order for you to be one of the additional hypemen."

i ain't no muhfuckin' rapper slash hypeman and Luda already had 3 muhfuckas doing adlibs that day (Fate, 20, and Tity Boi) so i basically said "hook that turntable up shawty and let's get it poppin".

can u say "good choice?"

not only did i get a lotta "face time", but the scratches i laid down during the performance were some of the best that i'd ever done in that type of setting (at that point in my career, lol). basically, upon deciding to scratch the classic Public Enemy #1 soundbite "1, 1, 1, hoo-hah", i knew that i had to do proper justice to it (just like a couple of my DJ heroes Jazzy Jeff and DJ Scratch did before me on classic records) and boy did i ever....

so much so that when the show finally aired a couple weeks later i got soooooooooooo many hits from DJ's around the country like "yo nigga you were killing that shit on Chappelle last night!!" as a DJ, that qualifies as one of those moments that you live for because you know that your peers are gonna be watching intently and paying attention to EVERY little thing you do or don't do so you gotta represent....

why this performance never made it to the DVD's of Chappelle's Show is beyond me, that's a question you gotta ask Chaka Zulu or Kevin Liles cause i heard that there was some type of clearance issue (????) but i wasn't privy to the exact details. all i know is that whenever i see this episode being rerun i get HYPED cause i know i held it down for all the REAL DJ's in the world.

thank you Marisa for unearthing this gem for me...

y'all holla back now ya hear???
